Bunn Airpot Coffee Maker and Brewing Guide
The Bunn airpots are large silver and black containers that function like carafes, keeping coffee hot and
dispensing it easily. Follow these steps carefully to brew directly into them.
Required Equipment and Locations
1. Bunn Coffee Maker - The large black and silver machine on the counter.
2. Airpot (Coffee Carafe)
- Extra airpots are stored on the counter to the left of the brewer. The airpot
is a carafe, keeping the brewed coffee hot and ready to dispense.
3. Water Pitcher - Located on the coffee maker or by the sink.
4. Coffee Filters - Stored in the cabinet below the coffee maker.
5. Whole Coffee Beans - Found in the container labeled “Coffee Beans” next to the grinder.
6. Grinder - Positioned to the right of the coffee maker.
If any items are missing, please notify the kitchen manager.
Step-by-Step Brewing Instructions
1. Prepare the Coffee Maker with a Water Cycle (if not recently used)
- Check the Funnel: Ensure the funnel is empty of any coffee grounds and securely attached to the coffee maker.
- Place a Container to Catch Water: Position a suitable container under the funnel, as water will begin dispensing immediately after adding it to the reservoir.
- Fill the Water Pitcher with water up to the 72 oz mark. (The pitcher has markings to help measure this.)
- Open the flip-top water reservoir lid on top of the coffee maker.
- Pour the water into the reservoir and close the lid. Water will start flowing almost immediately, so make sure the container is in place to catch it.
- Discard the Collected Water: Once the water cycle is complete, empty the collected water in the sink.
- Refill the Pitcher to the 72 oz mark: Now, refill the water pitcher to 72 oz for brewing the coffee.
- Note: If coffee has been brewed in the last 2 days, you can skip the water cycle step and go straight to brewing.
2. Set Up the Funnel and Filter
- Insert a New Coffee Filter: Place a fresh coffee filter in the funnel, which holds the coffee grounds during brewing.
3. Prepare the Coffee Grinder
- Fill the Bean Hopper: Ensure the grinder’s bean hopper is full of whole coffee beans.
Tip: Make sure the hopper is full, or the grinder may run without enough beans, resulting in weaker coffee.
- Set the Grind Size: Adjust the grind setting dial to “18” for the optimal grind size.
- Press Start: Start the grinder. Once it’s done, the ground coffee will collect in the ground coffee container at the bottom.
4. Transfer the Coffee Grounds
- Carefully empty the freshly ground coffee from the ground coffee container into the coffee filter you placed in the funnel.
- Gently shake the funnel to level the grounds for even brewing.
5. Position the Airpot (Coffee Carafe)
- Prepare the Airpot: Open the airpot lid and remove the brew-through stem (the black spout piece). Think of the airpot as a thermal carafe that keeps coffee hot and makes it easy to dispense.
- Place the Airpot Under the Funnel: Position the airpot directly beneath the funnel and push it back until it meets the bumpers at the back to ensure alignment.
6. Begin Brewing
- Open the flip-top water reservoir lid on top of the coffee maker.
- Slowly pour the 72 oz of water into the reservoir. Brewing will start immediately, with water flowing through the funnel and into the airpot below.
- Keep the Funnel in Place to avoid any splashing or misalignment.
7. Wait for Brewing to Complete
- When the water has stopped flowing, the brewing process is complete.
- Carefully remove the airpot, close its lid, and reinsert the brew-through stem. This part allows coffee to be dispensed when serving.
8. Clean Up for the Next Brew
- Remove the Funnel and discard the used coffee grounds and filter.
- Replace with a fresh coffee filter and fresh grounds if you’re making another pot.
Tips for Success
- Use Fresh Coffee Each Time: Always use a new filter and freshly ground coffee to maintain a strong flavor.
- Align the Airpot Properly: Push the airpot (carafe) back until it touches the bumpers to ensure proper alignment.
- Keep the Funnel in Place: While pouring water, ensure the funnel remains in place to avoid any water spraying.
- Remember, the Airpot Functions Like a Carafe: The airpot keeps coffee hot and allows for easy dispensing, similar to a thermal carafe.
